All home entertainment systems have three main components that are necessary to create a good quality, functional home theater system. The first part is the television or video display, the screen. Next comes the sound system – probably the most important element and where you should spend the most money at least initially. The third major part is the source – such as a DVD or Blu-ray player or even a satellite receiver. Other sources are available such as games consoles and even your internet or music. It is these three major pieces of electronic equipment that make up what we refer to as a home cinema or home theatre.
With the screen element we have many available options depending very much on our budget and personal preferences. With televisions alone there are many variations of size and resolution even 3D sets are available if that’s your thing. HDTV, LCD and Plasma screens are a few of the most common television type around today. All the screens come in a range of sizes – right up to the ridiculously huge! Another great addition to a home cinema is a digital projector to really create that cinema effect.
The audio system is going to make a huge difference to the whole setup. A good audio system includes a receiver, amplifier and the surround sound speaker system. The quality of this setup will ultimately determine how good your home theater is. Another important factor to be aware of is good surround sound speaker placement and how this can effect the whole system.
The source is not so critical to the overall quality of your system – it is just a delivery method. The exception is where you have a high quality player such as Blu-ray disc player, but remember to match this to a high definition screen for best results.
