When it comes to storing your boat, you can go with your driveway (local ordinances permitting), your garage, an outdoor lot, or a storage facility specifically designed for storing boats (and sometimes even RVs too). Here we’ll talk about some things you should consider when looking at boat storage buildings.
Top of your list of things to consider should be security. After all, you are leaving a very expensive item in the care of another. Likely you aren’t going to look in on it for months. When you visit a potential storage facility you should look for some things. Is the area well lit? Are there multiple locks between you and the boat (for example, a perimeter fence followed by a locked building followed by a lock on your specific storage unit)? Are there 24-hour security cameras? Are there 24-hour security guards? If no guards then is there an alarm system which is monitored 24-hours? Are they insured against theft?
Security makes it hard to get in, but it also needs to be easy to get in… for you! How convenient is the location from your house? from the body of water where you’ll use the boat? How convenient are their hours? Is there a way to get access off-hours? Will you have your own key or combination? What if you lose the key or combination? Know the answers to these questions ahead of time to relieve stress later on.
What about the lease or rental terms? Is there a minimum? What are the penalties for breaking a lease early? Again, knowing ahead of time is beneficial.
Finally, how easy is it to maneuver your towing vehicle in and out of the space? Boat storage buildings want to maximize their space by fitting as many boats as possible so you need to make sure you can make the necessary maneuvers without damaging your car or boat.
